GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOPS

Hi there! Let's do art!

I offer several courses at GC Elzenhof (Kroonlaan 12, 1050): Perspective 1 & 2ShadingPortrait 1 & 2Human FigureTheory of Color and Sacred Geometry. I have designed them as a continuum of 10 classes or so depending on the calendar (Sometimes it can be 9 classes) in order to give the basics on those topics in a short time.

The basics for real
These courses are meant to give real tools to the students to make them improve their skills and to solve all the questions they may have regarding those topics. So to speak, they are meant to be a kind of coaching in managing: the structure of the model, its volume, shape, and potential movements, grasping the true values (or gray) of the composition in shading, its inner relations, and the pertaining sensual feeling of the light, etc. Therefore, if you need help in understanding how to improve in drawing, what is happening that you are not succeeding in drawing what you want, and what you should see and do in order to avoid that vicious circle of mistakes that constantly keeps you trapped in the same kind of misunderstanding, you will find here your place.

My goal
Personally, I am not only focused on controlling the final result of the student but also on making them develop their imaginary and perceptive skills, which from my point of view are the true challenge in visual arts. It is all about the way we perceive and how many things we can identify in front of us and the way we can grow in grasping more aspects in a more accurate way. As this is my goal, my class is not reduced to get no matter how a nice resulting image. The nice resulting image will come as a consequence of the progress we make in our perception. Also, I like to teach and be challenged by all kind of questions. It makes me feel alive and connected to you and the issue in question. We all perceive differently, so what is obvious for one it is ungraspable for other. All the questions point out a key issue.

Put your stressful life into brackets
We all have a rush time, running from one responsibility to another. At some point, we have no time to calm down and even less the chance to stop our mind constantly plenty of thoughts to all directions. The workshops of drawing also provide the instance in which for 2 hours there is nothing else that can disturb you. Your mind gets focused and clear as if you were practicing a kind of meditation. We enjoy a calm music and we get attentive to the beauty of life: the beauty out there and the beauty of our perception-imagination of it.

Note: Not always I am offering all of these courses. Check which ones are the upcoming courses to be sure you can apply to the one you want. In case you want a workshop that I am not offering at the moment, write me an email to vero.aris@gmail.com so that I can consider your opinion for the next period.
Anyway, if you need more information or you want to reserve your place in one of them, write me to the email vero.aris@gmail.com. I will try to answer asap. Cheers!

Linear Perspective. Level 1
Perspective is the basic tool for most of the expressions in visual arts. It is fundamental for drawing, painting, and sculpting. It is useful for (i) making shapes in the 3D space, (ii) for understanding the relations between the objects of your composition (positions, directions, proportions, possible movements, etc.) and (iii) for tracing the rhythm of the composition as a whole. It is basic not because it is easy, but because it is everywhere, i.e., at every level of our regard.

Shading
Shading is one of the first poetic dimensions in visual arts. It is not merely related to the way we shade by smudging the paper, but rather to the mystery of the light. By shading, we learn the way to identify the tone-values of the object, its texture, and temperature. We also learn how to interpret the way in which it mysteriously appears in the atmosphere of the scene. It is also related to our emotions and the story we want to tell about them. This way, the workshop on shading is meant to provide the necessary skills to create different kinds of compositions (by learning how to sketch) and to identify the value that the objects have pertaining to the way they react to the light: by absorbing it, reflecting it and by letting it passes through them (transparency). If your plan is to paint one day, the workshop on shading will be fundamental.

Requirements:          Notions on Linear Perspective 1.
Recommended for:   Those who want to play shading without fear.
Skills:                        We develop sensual and emotional skills.
Materials:                  Notebook A3, graphite pencils 2B, 6B and 8B, rubber.
Duration:                   9 or 10 classes, 2 hours and a half each class.

Portrait. Level 1
The expression of the human face is amazing as well as challenging. It hides beautiful mysteries that you just start to realize while you are already working on a portrait project. A subtle change in the position of the eye or in the darkness of the chic can really transform the face as a whole. How to get there with the physiognomy as well as with the soul of the person you would like to portrait? This workshop provides the tools and develops the skills to make the first step forward to manage them by working on both the abstract proportions of the face-head as a volume and the sensitive grasping of the features of life models (classmates). Our goal is to get familiarized to the head proportions in order to interpret a picture accurately.

Requirements:          Notions of Linear Perspective and Shading different textures.
Recommended for:   Those who want to discover the anatomy of the human face by:
tracing lines, building volumes and shading without fear.
Skills:                        We develop analytical, sensual and emotional skills.
Materials:                  Notebook A3, pen, graphite pencils 2B, 6B and 8B, rubber.
Duration:                   9 or 10 classes, 2 hours each class.

Portrait. Level 2
For those who want to continue working on portraits, this workshop provides the instances to address self-portrait from looking at the mirror and life models portraits. The workshop is designed to welcome new students with an introduction of the head-face proportions and how to apply them into a 3D model (as the workshop of Portraits Level 1), the moment in which the more experienced students can improve and internalize better those proportions in a more mature way. Later, instead of turning into a picture interpretation, we turn into the understanding of the way in which we may grasp the real features and proportions of life models by drawing a self-portrait and life model portraits.

Requirements:          Notions of Linear Perspective and Shading different textures.
Recommended for:   Those who want to discover the anatomy of the human face by:
tracing lines, building volumes and shading without fear.
Skills:                        We develop analytical, sensual and emotional skills.
Materials:                  Notebook A3, pen, graphite pencils 2B, 6B, and 8B, rubber. Mirror.

Human Figure. Life model
The human figure is a challenge in terms of its actual and potential movements. It is its balance that convinces us first and its direction that leads our attention. How to observe the live model in order to discover those key aspects? This workshop of Human Figure Level 1 helps in developing the skills to work on the structure, proportions, and movements of the human figure, by sketching short and long poses. We will start working on the body contour by using ink and then we will continue with charcoal to get deeper into the skin and flesh. We will finish with white and dark pastels on middle gray paper.

Mirror.

Color
The workshop of Color is aimed to work on the main and more impressive interactions of colors explained by Josef Albers and to provide an instance in which we can make use of this knowledge for our free interpretation. Josef Albers (March 19, 1888–March 25, 1976) has achieved one of the most radical and brave research on colors, seeking to cultivate a new way of studying and understanding them. By essay and error, he has found their intimate interaction which finally leads our perception into a surprising visual illusion. His findings cross visual arts as well as physics and psychology.

Requirements:          No requirements.
Recommended for:   Artists, designers, architects, illustrators and all those who want to
                                 discover the magic of colors.
Skills:                        We develop analytical, sensual and emotional skills.

Sacred Geometry

This workshop is focused on playing with the relations between 2D and 3D geometry in a meditative way. We play with Mandalas, Plato's solids, and some fractals, depending on the way the group progresses. The idea is to draw developing your intuition, this very special projective imagination that constantly unveils the next step, but intuitively and not by a rational analysis. This way, it is a course in which we do not draw by thinking but by following the intimacy we develop with our creation. It is recommended for experienced and non-experienced people. Definitively, you will develop your projective imagination so you will be able to see first what you will draw. To put differently, in this workshop we draw only by imagining first, with the help of some previous lines that can guide us.

Requirements:          There are no requirements.
Recommended for:   Those who want to play without thinking and relax.
Skills:                        We develop fine motor skills as well as intuitive skills.
Materials:                  Notebook A3, graphite pencils 2B, 6B and 8B, rubber.
Duration:                   9 or 10 classes, 2 hours each class.
